Routine Analysis
SL is proficient to perform virtually all routine and specialty test procedures required by the United States coal industry and its markets. Routine coal samples can be received by delivery personnel, mail, common carrier, or by SL's field service personnel.

Capabilities include:

Routine Sampling
Proper sampling and sample preparation is a critical for accurate analysis. There are two criteria that must be followed when sampling.

1. Ensure that the sample is a true representative of the bulk material, and
2. Ensure that the sample does not undergo any chemical or physical changes after completion of the sampling procedure and during the storage prior to analysis.

Sampling services include:
  • Trained and experienced crews are immediately available to obtain coal samples under all types of coal sampling situations
  • SL can handle complex jobs, such as preparation plant performance testing, on any size plant at any geographic location
  • Auger sampling is also available in many geographic areas
  • Consulting on special sampling problems or large, involved jobs is provided upon request

Bias Tests
SL has bias tested hundreds of sampling systems throughout the US. SL can design an ASTM bias test to will collect the necessary volume of sample required for test, necessary sample required for daily analysis and design the test to best approximate the normal system operation.

Bias Tests can be:
  • Paired increment, Paired Batch or Intraphase Test Designed
  • Parametric or Nonparametric statistics
  • Used on Auger, Falling Stream or Cross-Belt sampling systems

    SL Bias Test services include:
    • Consultation for a mutually agreed upon test design
    • Pre-Inspection of the sampling system

Boiler MACT
Standard Laboratories has developed a turn-key compliance program specifically designed for operators of industrial, commercial and institutional boilers and process heaters that are required to monitor their fuel to comply with the EPA's NESHAP standards.

To provide our customers with the most accurate methods and Lowest Quantifiable Limits for Trace Elements, SL has continued to acquire state-of-the-art instrumentation to make us the leader in the industry in determination of Trace Elements. The instruments include:
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma – Atomic Emission Spectrophotometer
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrophotometer
  • Oxidative Hydrolysis Microcoulometer
  • Ion Chromatography System
  • Various Mercury Analyzers*

    * SL is equipped to run EPA methods 1631 & 245.7 to provide the lowest levels of Hg detection. Working range is between 0.05 ppt to 250 ppb.
